SMALL COUNTRY, BIG SPEEDCUBING TALENT

29 June 2026

New Zealand’s fastest and most talented speedcubers are gearing up to compete at two premier events, starting with the hotly contested GAN New Zealand Nationals 2026 in Wellington and the prestigious GAN WCA Oceanic Championships 2026 in Auckland.

For the first time in history, NZ will host the GAN WCA Oceanic Championships 2026. Organiser, Speedcubing NZ, has partnered with international speedcubing brand GAN Cube, the recommended speed cube brand for speedcubing. The four-day competition includes a special GAN Smart Cubes event as part of the schedule. It has drawn over 150 competitors from 12 nations, including a strong and talented NZ contingent.

“Speedcubing NZ is incredibly proud to host the GAN WCA Oceanic Championships in 2026”, says SNZ President, Wee-Yeong Eyou. “Our team is working hard to produce a world-class event for our cubing community.”

SNZ has positioned the GAN NZ Nationals 2026 competition in July to provide speedcubers with a large-scale competition as preparation for Oceanics. Competition partners, GAN Cube, are providing a special GANZONE for competitors, supporters and families to enjoy on all competition days. GAN Cube is known as the brand for speedcubing internationally.

Despite being small, NZ consistently ranks in the top 10 worldwide for speedcubing overall performance. NZ produces some of the world’s most talented speedcubers across a variety of disciplines. NZ competitors will defend six Oceanic records (OCR), one world record (WR) and numerous national records (NR) and hold several former WRs. The 3x3 section includes an exciting head-to-head finals format with national records to defend. The current 3x3 NR time to beat is 4.39 seconds (single solve). The NR for the most 3x3 cubes successfully solved while blindfolded is 55/58 cubes in 60 minutes.

Speedcubing is a competitive sport that involves solving a variety of different puzzles, most notably the classic 3x3 Rubik’s cube. Speedcubing attracts all age groups and abilities, regardless of ethnicity, gender, including families who speed cube. It provides a place to connect socially through an activity that replaces screentime.

Speedcubing NZ is the WCA governing body for New Zealand and official organiser of New Zealand Nationals and GAN WCA Oceanics Championship 2026.
